Scotland's Southernmost County

This is even more confusing than the Pembrokeshire question – because Dumfries and Galloway is not, and never has been, a county.

The 1972 Local Government Act, referred to in the note to the aforesaid Pembrokeshire question, divided Scotland up into regions – most of which were created by amalgamating two or more counties. The region of Dumfries and Galloway comprised the historic (traditional) counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtwonshire; the latter two are collectively known as Galloway.

Rather like Wales, Scotland is now divided into 32 single–tier "council areas", one of which is Dumfries and Galloway.

The question might have been better worded, "Which is the most southerly of Scotland's 32 current council areas?"

Having said that, I personally would have found this even more confiusing, so I would have been inclined to include the words "Sharing its name with one of the regions that existed from 1974 to 1996 ... "
